Visit to Ruby's Room

This is Ruby!!  Ruby is 2 today.  When i first visited Ruby's room, i liked what i saw and knew that Ruby's mum (Danielle) and I had a similar style.  Danielle kept changing her mind when decorating Ruby's room and felt it was never complete, so she called upon me to finish the room and help her make final choices.  During the consultation we spoke about colours and both agreed we liked yellow's and grey's so I chose a cute Yellow Apple Print and added a grey cushion and Beauty Baby doll which is also grey.

We also wanted to use some brighter colours and different prints into the room, which I did by using art work on the walls, choosing some brightly coloured baskets for the change table, and then adding hot pink, white and orange bedding (looks much better than it sounds).

This is Beauty Baby - Ruby and I think she is beautiful.

Love the grey's and yellows which match perfectly with the bright pink orange.

Ruby loves to read her books, so I created a little library space, and added a comfortable but gorgeous Jumble cushion and a crocheted basket for additional books.
Danielle loves to take photo's and is a great photographer, so I added floating shelves and used photo's of Ruby to add a personal element to the room.  I also incorporated Swiden design wooden decorations and little geometric cubes for pattern and colour.
How cute is the photo of Ruby wearing Danielle's wedding day heels!!!

Happy birthday Ruby, i hope that you, mousey, and beauty baby are having a picnic in your new room right now xx

Winter Wonderland

This is the 2012 trend that i am really excited about.   It's all about creating a warm and cosy feel, which is great for a nursery or children's bedroom.  We want our children to sleep well and what better way to help them have a restful night than creating a snugly space for them.  I am calling this the "arctic trend" which has evolved from our interest in climate control, the enviroment & weather conditions.   An "arctic room" is particularly great for boys, as the colors are quite masculine, think greys, black, white, and different shades of blue.  I would replace blue with mint green if i was designing for a girl.   To create this space, add materials made of felt and wool, and use untreated wooden furniture or pale colored woods.  As the colors of the room will be quite cool, it's important to use warm, & cuddly soft furnishings to keep it balanced.  Decoration items should feature mountains, glaciers, polar bears, Eskimo's, snowflakes, arctic foxes and seals. Finally, add a cup of hot chocolate (with marshmallows), a pair of ugg boots and a hooded dressing gown and you have yourself a very cool "winter wonderland" kids room or should i say Igloo?

Hopefully you read my last blog on Children's Interior Trends for 2012, and therefore you will be anticipating this instalment.  As you may be aware, in 2011, there were many tree's, owls and deers visiting our homes (well not literally, but you know what i mean).  This year, there will be even more woodland creatures making appearances.  You will need to be on the look out for foxes, raccoons, squirrels, bears and even skunks.  If you are wanting to create a warm and cosy nursery or kid's room then the woodland theme could be perfect.  Colors include rich browns, olive green, shades of orange and my favourite color (at this moment), grey.   If you are not wanting to go overboard but still like the idea of incorporating this theme, then a simple lamp may the perfect solution.  Appropriately named Down to the woods, has a couple of wonderful choices and their woodland wall stickers are also quite cool if you want to go all out.   To be honest it's not my favourite trend for 2012 but i do  love lots of the products out there and think the woodland room can look amazing if done right.
I can't wait to bring you the next blog as I think it would be favourite up and coming trend.  "I wonder what it will be"?, i hear you ask... Well I will give you a clue, it's very cold.

World Wide Trend

2012 & 2013 will bring us new trends in children's bedroom and playroom designs.  The next couple of Blogs that i post will be all about last years trends that are staying with us a little longer and new trends that will follow.  From furniture to colors, to decoration, i will keep you up to date so you know what to expect in the next 12 to 18 months.  Travel was big in 2011, with around the world wall stickers, world map cushions and inflatable globes.  This year the travel bug will continue, With world maps and even personalised street maps being featured on children's walls.  Suitcases will be seen again both used as storage or decoration.  Older vintage suitcases piled up & used as a side table in vintage inspired rooms and fun fabric suitcases which will add color and pattern will be featured in modern bedrooms.   We are encouraging our children from an early age to travel and see the world, using art, toys and play to inspire them.  I have a feeling we are also getting quite nostalgic ourselves, and want to be reminded of our time in Paris or London, so adding Big Ben stickers to our children's walls and Parisian maps, not only looks great but also makes us smile.  If you are looking for something different to world maps, but still want to inspire travel, Postage stamp posters are great, especially in a foreign language - you can find some here.  Also be on the lookout for camera related items, these will be particularly popular with teenagers.  Finally a cheap and chearful idea is to ask everyone that travels, to send your child a postcard, you can then make your own travel garland, or make their own pin board, promising to take them to a destination of their choice when they reach 13.  I know Disneyland would of been on my list, but then i didn't have a Parisan street map to inspire me.

Thank you to the folllowing:
